Forensic Projects



Blast Studies

Damage to the structural framing occurred as a result of an explosion. Our investigation identified which framing members could be repaired and which member needed to be replaced.


Condition Studies

Visual observations were conducted of an existing structurally suspended foundation during a structural load study.


Connection Failures

A roof/wall framing connection at a retail structure failed. Our investigation revealed the construction documents specified a slip connection to allow for movement between the wall and the roof framing member. However, the contractor provided a rigid connection which lead to the failure.


Drainage/Erosion Studies

During the construction phase of a road improvement project, an outfall structure was undermined following a rain event. Our investigation revealed that the contractor did not maintain adequate site drainage during the building process.


Fire Studies

A study was conducted on the load bearing concrete walls of a structure which remained standing following a fire. We determined the remaining wall system showed evidence of damage. Supplemental testing would be required to properly assess integrity of the walls. As a result, the owner chose to have the wall demolished.


Load Studies

In response to homeland security directions, our office was asked to determine the feasibility of installing additional equipment on a structurally suspended concrete floor system. This included the determination of possible floor deflection by imposing various loads on the floor and measuring overall deflection.


Performance Monitoring

A crack monitor was installed on an abandoned concrete footing for the purpose of assessing ongoing foundation movement.


Roof Failure

The roof of a retail structure collapsed during a rain event. Our investigation revealed several roof framing members had been cut to allow for the installation of a mechanical duct system. The damage to the framing members for the duct system combined with the ponding of water lead to the failure.


Water Damage Studies

The deflection of a residential balcony was determined to be the result of water damage to a wood framing member due to a construction defect.


Water Penetration Studies

Our investigation of water intrusion to a building’s interior was found to be the result of improper water proofing around the exterior windows.


Wind Studies

A collapse of a prefabricated metal building occurred during the construction phase of the project due to a high wind event. It was determined that the contractor did not provide adequate bracing during the construction process.

Material Studies



Anchor Bolt

A rigid steel frame collapsed during construction. Our evaluation of the anchor bolt connections indicated the design of the epoxy anchors was inadequate and lead to the failure.


Stone Veneer

During a routine maintenance activity, an exterior veneer panel (granite) fell from a thirteen-story building. It was alleged that the panel dislodged as a result of the panel anchors. However, load testing of the veneer indicated the connections were performing as intended. We determined the failure was a result of an impact from a contractor’s scaffolding.


Concrete

Our investigation into the reported foundation movement of a historical structure revealed the floor depression was a result of failure of the concrete footings. Test results of the concrete cores obtained from the footings indicated that the concrete was of low strength and deteriorated with time.


Corrosion Evaluations

As part of a foundation feasibility study for a building remodel, we discovered the steel reinforcing had severely corroded. The restoration of the existing foundation was determined not be cost effective.


Masonry

Our investigation of the distress to the masonry veneer of a bank determined that the original masonry construction did not include any provisions (expansion joints, etc.) for differential movement between the main building and the adjacent drive-thru canopy.


Roof Membrane

Problems with roof leaks as a result of hail damage were reported at an office building. An investigation revealed the leaks were primarily due to ponding water and the membrane exceeding its life cycle.


Waterproofing

Our investigation of moisture intrusion along the base of the exterior wall at a retail center revealed the waterproofing assembly (building felt, flashing, etc.) at the base of the wall was not properly installed.


Wood

A fireplace chimney was found to be out of plumb. An investigation of the roof framing indicated the rafters did not provide adequate capacity to support the additional chimney loads.
